If you use the Discord app (and you probably do if you’re reading this), you might have noticed that when you want to underline, make text bold, or italicize some text in your messages, it’s not as simple as using Ctrl + B/I/U (Mac) or Ctrl + B/I/U (Windows). Instead, you need to use commands that look like this… [text](#123) …but what if I told you there’s a simpler way? Well, there is! It all starts with something called Markdown…

- Next to the text that you want to cross out, type a big slash like this _____________.
- Press the down arrow in the white space below the words that you typed earlier ________________.

- Then go back up one row with your cursor, so that all of the white space below where you crossed out text is empty __________________________________.
Bold words
Text changes can be done in Discord the same way they would be done on a word processor. All you have to do is highlight the text, right-click it, and then choose what change you want to make. For example, if you wanted your message to be italicized all you would have to do is select Italics from the drop-down menu that appears when you right-click it. The other option for text changes is font size or color. If you want the text highlighted yellow, for example, all you need to do is highlight it, press F3 on your keyboard or go into Formatting and scroll down until Color comes up.
Discord has a whole list of different changes you can make with Discord. Just press ctrl+F3, go into Formatting then click on Text Changes to get an idea of everything that is available for use. You’ll be able to choose from Bold, Italics, Underline, or Strikethrough (Cross out text). These are really handy for making statements stand out. If you are talking about something in a channel or chatting with one person in particular but want everyone else to notice it, bolding can do that easily. It’s also great if someone asks you a question on Discord and you want it read by everyone in your voice chat server.
Italicize words
Using the text editing tool, Discord makes it easy to make text changes like underlining, bold, or italics. The easiest way is the use shortcuts that involve simple keyboard commands on a PC or MacBook. Here are some handy shortcuts for your time writing!
Bold – Ctrl/Command + B
Italicize – Ctrl/Command + I
Underline – Ctrl/Command + U You can also highlight text (hold down the left mouse button), right-click on the highlighted section, and click Format in order to make these changes.
Underline words
When you want the text in italics, use two asterisks instead of one. In order to underline words, wrap them in ***. Lastly, if you want to make the text bold, use four asterisks before and after the words that need to be bolded. Text changes like these can help emphasize important parts of your message or distinguish one word from another when you’re typing fast!
The best part is, these text changes will display in your chats without having to ask a chat moderator or anyone else for that matter. It’s just another tool Discord has implemented into their platform to make life easier. The biggest plus of using text changes is it can help prevent confusion over what you type. For example, if you’re talking about someone named Jack Smith but accidentally use Jack Black instead, you can quickly change that mistake by highlighting it and clicking on italics or underlining.
Add strikethrough text
As you’re typing up text in a Discord chat, there are many different ways you can format it. To make a strikethrough in the text, type three backslashes with your desired text. To make italics, use two tildes with your desired text. To make it bold, type three asterisks with your desired text.
This is just one of the helpful tools for formatting in a Discord chat. The best thing about them is that they work on any platform that has the Discord app–whether that’s on Windows, macOS, Linux, or even iOS! It also makes it so no one will have trouble reading your post!
Cross out text
Want to get the attention of someone in your Discord chat? There are a few ways to do this. The first way is to use italics ( *text* ) or underline ( _text_ ). To make text italic, put two apostrophes on either side of the text you want to be italicized. Text that is underlined will be entered like so: “text“.
Note that you can also make text bold by using two asterisks in front of or behind it. If you put asterisks on either side, it will be bolded (e.g., **text** ). To make text bold and italic, use three apostrophes for both (e.g., ”’text”’ ). When using three apostrophes for both, be careful that your computer/smartphone does not see them as symbols rather than text changes. It is usually a good idea to avoid putting a space before or after formatting codes such as these. This can help to ensure that they are seen correctly by Discord’s servers.
