Out-of-control inboxes are a productivity killer, no matter how much or little you use Gmail to organize them. Many people avoid trying to organize their inboxes because it seems like an impossible task. There are so many emails to wade through, and it’s hard to tell which ones you need to keep and which ones you can trash or recycle without missing anything important. Follow this step-by-step guide on how to create folders and labels in Gmail to organize your inbox, however, and you’ll find that organization becomes quick and easy enough that it won’t feel like work at all!
Create Folders
First, go to your Labels tab, and create a label called To Read. Once you do that, create a new label called Done. Then under your Inbox tab, you’ll see the labels in whatever order you want them in. You can drag each one around by clicking on the desired position of the labels. You can also rearrange or delete any label or folder by hovering over it. Now all that’s left is adding emails to the desired categories! There are two ways of doing this- either you have an email open and click on the tag from above like.

Create Labels
One of the best ways to stay organized in your inbox is by using labels. Labels are a way of marking emails with a certain topic and storing them in a folder. Labels can be used as an easier way to filter through your emails and find the ones you need, quickly.
Labeling an email will take it out of your inbox and allow you not to look at it for a set amount of time. You can label as many or as few emails as you would like. Create Rules
When creating rules, you can set up your inbox so that an email will get automatically filed into a specific folder. This not only helps clean up your inbox, but it can also help keep the info more organized and clear. There are two different ways of setting up new rules in Gmail: basic filters and advanced filters. Basic filters allow you to create a rule based on a specific word in the subject line or the content of the email message itself. When creating advanced filter rules, you are able to base them on data like sender or recipient information as well as whether someone is starred in your inbox.
File Important Emails
Your inbox can quickly become an unmanageable mess of different emails with labels, email drafts, and more. We know what you’re thinking: How am I supposed to sort through all this?. It’s a great question, but the answer is easy. By following these simple steps for labeling and filing emails in your inbox, you’ll be able to quickly find important information when you need it.
Label Important Emails
Before we start creating labels and folders, it’s important to first create a label that you can use for an overall review of your email. To do this, click on the dropdown arrow in the top right-hand corner of your inbox and select Create new label. Now type a name for the label into the blank box and click Create. I named mine Important. After that, anytime you want to sort through your emails using that label, all you have to do is open your inbox and select import from the drop-down list under Labels in the upper right-hand corner.

Archive Email Appropriately
– Create your folders and labels by going into Settings and clicking on the General tab. – Create new labels that you’ll need as you go through your inbox, like Promotional for newsletters or Personal for messages from friends and family. – Choose which folder you want an email to live in by moving it over to the main screen of Gmail. – To delete messages, hover over the individual message until the trashcan appears. Clicking this will delete all of its children’s emails too (if there are any). This is a great way to declutter your inbox!
Delete Spam
Gmail will automatically delete spam from your inbox, but if you want a foolproof way to make sure that everything is deleted and stays deleted, go into the settings. You can do this by clicking the gear icon in the top right corner of your inbox and then clicking Spam. Here you’ll find a check box for Deleting all spam automatically. Once checked, click on Save Changes below.
All your work is done, it’s time to organize! Head back over to the settings screen again and choose Labels on the left-hand side. Clicking this will bring up all of your labels. Remember how I said we were going to organize our inbox?

Using Keyboard Shortcuts
There are lots of methods for getting organized, but one of the easiest is using keyboard shortcuts. Even if you don’t know the shortcut for a given command, a quick search of Gmail help should have it covered.
I’m going to walk you through some super useful shortcuts that will make your inbox look great and be easy for you to find things.
If you want all messages with attachments, hit Ctrl and A at the same time (you’ll see this on most keyboards as ^A). This will select everything in your inbox so that no matter what keyboard shortcut you use next, they’ll apply globally. Hit the Enter key (or ^M) after typing Ctrl and A to run the shortcut.
