With the Chiefs in first place in the AFC West and Mahomes on pace for over 6,000 passing yards this season, it’s hard to not think of him as one of the best players in the league.
But just how good is he? Well, it turns out that Patrick Mahomes has a pretty clear idea of how great he is. In fact, he even went so far as to compare himself to some pretty big names on Monday night: “That’s what I’m trying to prove,” he replied. “I’m going to keep proving that.”
The Chiefs quarterback was asked if he believes he’s the best player in the league.
Mahomes was asked if he believes he’s the best player in the NFL. “I think so,” he said, “but I’m still working to get better every day.”
Mahomes is a humble guy who doesn’t have a big ego and has always been honest about his abilities. He was also quick to point out how hard it was for him to be thrown into such an important role as QB after only being on the team for two weeks—and that’s exactly what happened when he took over for Alex Smith in 2017 (who had been benched).
“That’s what I’m trying to prove,” he replied. “I’m going to keep proving that.”
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is a professional football player, and it’s not really surprising that he relies on his own thoughts to get through the game.
After a touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill in the first quarter against Cincinnati on Sunday, Mahomes was asked by reporters if he believed he was the best quarterback in the league. His response? “That’s what I’m trying to prove.”
In other words: no one knows how good you are until they see something new from you every time out there on the field. And so far this season with Kansas City (7-1), Mahomes has thrown for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes—an impressive number considering he just turned 27 years old last month!
His response sparked a lot of discussion after the game, and even led people to question if it was scripted or not.
Mahomes wasn’t just asked a question and answered it honestly. He was asked if he thought he could beat the Bengals, and gave a response that led people to question whether or not it was scripted.
The “scripted” part got everyone talking about what happened in his post-game interview. People thought it was scripted because of how confident Mahomes sounded in saying that Kansas City would win against Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon.
But Mahomes has always been known for his honesty and humility.
In fact, his teammates are so impressed with his personality that they’ve nicknamed him “Mahomes America,” a reference to the quarterback’s love of country music.
It’s nice to know that even a professional athlete like Patrick Mahomes is humble.
How many pro athletes are willing to admit when they’ve made a mistake? How many of them would say, “I screwed up,” or, “I’m sorry for my mistakes.” Not many I bet! But then again, Patrick Mahomes is no different than any other athlete—he just happens to play quarterback in the NFL instead of baseball or hockey. And because he plays football at such a high level with such amazing statistics (he threw 50 touchdowns last year), everyone wants him on their team as soon as possible. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017 and has since led them through several playoff runs while becoming one of the best quarterbacks ever seen in this league right now.
